Let me tell you what this picture is. I realize it's fuzzy. It's a day from my Google calendar this week when I scheduled both Ladies Night Out and my husband's birthday dinner for the exact same time. I didn't notice the double-booking for three weeks. As in, I didn't see the giant block of red for "busy" as I was adding the second agenda item directly on top of it. It's moments like this that make me nervous. What else might be slipping through the cracks (did I send my child to school? put on clean underwear? put on any underwear?).

I think the solution might be a blog. While on the one hand, starting this blog is one more task to stay on top of, it will be a good way to exorcise some swirly thoughts and create more space in my brain. And, let's face it, writing a blog is cheaper and more fun than therapy (unless you have blog-o-phobia).

As someone who sits in a home office much of the time alone, I think it will be good to chat a few times a week with someone other than Jillian, my orchid. She's lovely but I don't think she's up for it anymore. Her last flower fell off yesterday while I was being interviewed on the phone; I believe the responsibility of being my office-mate was too much for her (see pics below).

I hope you will speak up sometimes. I have never liked like how quiet Jillian is. It's creepy.

What can you expect from this blog? I'm certain it will have the same themes that pop up in all my endeavors: complicated things women are thinking but not saying aloud; life's little absurdities; the pressures of going against the grain, humbling moments that may as well be used for comedic value. Plus, you can count on stress-reducing, life-affirming strategies I pick up along the way from past research, new research, trial-and-error experiences in raising kids and creative projects, experts, and maybe you.

Speaking of you, how can you tell YOUR brain is on overload? And do you have any tricks for mind-clearing?

I am thankful for three things today;
1. This new blog-hallelujah!
2. The ability of four working mamas to reschedule this dinner after giant brain fart and literally no feathers ruffled, we have ALL been there
3. I am not your office mate. Poor Jillian. I think you need a beta fish

Alana, what a fantastic idea! A Beta-fish and 3 cats - intense drama to ensue! Stay tuned...

Happy to have you join the blogosphere. It's funny, but with all I have going on, writing on the blog does help me quiet my busy mind a bit. I find the topics I write about are the things that my mind won't stop going over, and then once the post is written, there's a tiny bit of calm. Hope it helps for you too.

Last week I had my first ever "job had to come first" mommy day. My first real struggle with work-guilt.
I was so excited to get a job interview with a company that seemed really promising, that I accepted their only available day/time slot to come meet with them. It was several days of "woohooo- I will get this job!" until i crashed with one line from my younger girl- "Oh mommy, I am sooo sooo happy that you are the chaperone for the field trip!". Yep, for the same day and time as my interview. Totally forgot about that sign up sheet I filled out a few weeks prior. Oy, the tears that fell. And then my little girl cried too. Double booking happens and it can be so messy. (hey, at least I got the job- although it shouldnt have made the difference, I have to admit announcing this to the teacher, the chaperoning mom that subbed in, and of course my daughter)

Oh, no, that is a seriously harsh double-booking, and such a hard one to START on. Sending huge hugs to you, and congrats on your new job, lady! The good news is that you will have endless fodder to contribute to this blog. xoxo

I learned from my neighbor (I live in Florida) that orchids regrow. She took all of the orchids from last year that were, well, like Jillian, and attached them to her trees. This involved some mulchy stuff and some wire to secure said orchids to the trees. Well! They are all in bloom and gorgeous. So, don't give up on Jillian. She may have more life in her, yet. Quiet though she may be. Obviously, I enjoyed your blog post and wanted to share my most recent "I'm overwhelmed" moment, but I don't have time now -- I'm overwhelmed. :-)

Laney, I will never ever give up on Jillian but there is no way hell I'm dealing with wiring and mulch, unless it helps me grow tropical fruit trees in Boston successfully. As always, your feedback is appreciated.

I find the days I exercise (usually yoga) are calmer, more orderly days. Even if it's only 10-20 minutes, vs. the 30-60 I would like to aspire to, it still makes a HUGE difference. Alternativley, if even yoga seems like too much, I sit, with my eyes closed, in a comfortable position and try to focus only on my breathing for 10 minutes. Some might call that meditation, I call it "sitting with myself and my thoughts." Whenever my brain runs off like a lost puppy thinking about grocery lists or work to-do's or permission slips, doctor's appointments, dinner plans, etc....I try and bring it back to focusing on breathing deeply. It really does help. The days I do it I find I've got more patience, more energy, and I'm nicer overall to everyone I encounter.

Kris-I too have experienced the calming powers of "sitting with myself and my thoughts" (aka meditation). I've always been a "sweat-your-stress-away-by-doing-tons-of-aerobic-exercise" kind of girl, but then I enrolled in an intro to meditation class. Didn't buy it at first but have now experienced the benefits of it. Finding the time to do it is another story!

I wonder if calling it "sitting with my thoughts" rather than "meditation" would make people more likely to do it? I think the whole "new agey" vision of women sitting in a leotard saying "OMMM" initimdates some. Anyone can sit with their thoughts for 10 min. a day!

Go Michelle, your real humor is captivating and refreshing! I know I'm doing too much when I leave bread pudding cooking in the oven two weeks in a row while I'm out - burnt to a crisp - the bread pudding - not the house, luckily...

Thanks so much, Julie. And, yes, the two weeks in a row is a great tip-off that brain is on full. Be careful, girl! :)
